01 - Place the drained black beans in a large mixing bowl and mash with a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth with some visible pieces.
02 - Add breadcrumbs, finely chopped onion, cumin, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to the mashed beans. Mix thoroughly to form a cohesive mixture.
03 - Divide the mixture into 4 even portions and shape each into a patty approximately 1/2 inch thick.
04 - Heat a nonstick skillet over medium heat. Lightly oil the surface if desired. Cook the patties for 4–5 minutes per side, until golden brown and firm.
05 - Place the cooked patties on hamburger buns and add preferred toppings or condiments. Serve immediately.
