Crockpot Pierogi Kielbasa Casserole (Print Version)

Layers of frozen pierogi, sliced kielbasa, and cheddar cheese simmered in a creamy sour cream sauce for the ultimate comfort meal.

# What You'll Need:

→ Main Ingredients

01 - 2 (16 oz) packages frozen potato and cheese pierogi
02 - 1 lb kielbasa, sliced into ½-inch rounds
03 - 1 medium yellow onion, thinly sliced
04 - 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

→ Sauce

05 - 1 (10.5 oz) can condensed cream of mushroom soup
06 - 1 cup sour cream
07 - ½ cup milk
08 - ½ tsp garlic powder
09 - ¼ tsp black pepper

→ Topping

10 - 2 tbsp chopped fresh chives or parsley

# Steps to Follow:

01 - Lightly grease the insert of a 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray or butter.
02 - Arrange half the frozen pierogi in an even layer on the bottom of the slow cooker. Top with half the sliced kielbasa and half the onions. Sprinkle with 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese.
03 - Repeat layering with remaining pierogi, kielbasa, onions, and another 1 cup of cheddar cheese.
04 - In a medium bowl, whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, sour cream, milk, garlic powder, and black pepper until completely smooth and well combined.
05 - Pour the sauce mixture evenly over the layered ingredients. Cover and cook on LOW for 4 hours until heated through, bubbly, and cheese is melted.
06 - Sprinkle with chopped fresh chives or parsley before serving, if desired.

# Additional Tips::

01 -
  • Everything cooks in one vessel so cleanup is practically nonexistent
  • The slow cooker makes the pierogi tender without them getting gummy or falling apart
  • It feeds six people comfortably but tastes even better as leftovers the next day
02 -
  • Resist the urge to lift the lid too often, every peek adds about fifteen minutes to the cooking time
  • The casserole is done when the edges are bubbling and the cheese has melted into all the nooks
  • Let it rest for about ten minutes before serving so the sauce has time to thicken slightly
03 -
  • If your pierogi are particularly thick, give them an extra thirty minutes in the slow cooker
  • Sharp cheddar makes a bigger impact than mild, so do not be afraid to go bold with the cheese
